The microanalysis laboratory provides a comprehensive and efficient elemental and thermal microanalysis service.
The laboratory is designed to support the research and teaching activities of the School of Chemistry, while an external service is also available to academic and commercial clients in the UK and overseas.
Microanalysis is used to help determine the composition and purity of compounds. The service is generally available for analysis of pure solid chemical samples, although other types of material may be accepted by prior arrangement.
The techniques available are:
- carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulphur analysis (CHNS) by Flash 2000 elemental analyser;
- metals analysis by Thermo iCap 6300 inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES);
- halide analysis (chlorine, bromine, iodine) by Metrohm potentiometric autotitrator;
- thermal analysis, both thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) using Perkin-Elmer and Seiko instrumentation.
