A broadening and reinforcing of core practical skills, utilising the skills and techniques developed in the first year laboratories. This includes multi-step synthesis, anhydrous and inert techniques, spectroscopic and analytical methods, computational calculation of molecular properties, rational design of experiments, independent research and safety assessment.
Development of core competency in practical chemistry, laboratory safety procedures including COSHH and risk assessment and analytical/transferable skills necessary for working as a scientist.
This second year laboratory class takes place on Tuesdays (6 hours) and Wednesdays (2 hours) each week.
After completing this unit students will be able to:
- Connect theory and practice to find appropriate methods, to collect data and make choices about the appropriate manipulation of that data.
- Undertake independent safety assessments of experiments, and carry out practical work efficiently and professionally.
- Be capable of interpreting and manipulating analytical data from multiple sources and using it to draw conclusions.
- Be able to critically analyse outcomes, research and contextualise your findings and report to a high technical standard.
Assessment Further Information
- Continuous assessment and lab reports
- Attendance at lab sessions is compulsory. Students are expected to attend all lab sessions. There is also a minimum pass mark of 40% for the practical unit, and this cannot be compensated or retaken for the second year assessment.
If attendance falls below expected requirements, or you do not achieve the pass mark of 40%, you will be unable to progress to your third year.
- Assessment Method: Continuous assessment occurs every week:
- Before the lab, via pre-reading of the lab manual and online or written pre-lab tests, which test your preparedness in terms of knowledge and risk awareness.
- In the lab, focusing on your lab book, good lab practice, technique and experimental outcomes.
- After the lab, through activities such as data analysis and formal reports.
Feedback: Weekly in the lab, through discussions with demonstrators and via written comments on submitted work.Monitoring and Progress: Your marks, attendance and feedback will be available each week via Blackboard.
