Polymer Materials Science and Engineering (1 Year) [MSc]

A Polymer Materials Science and Engineering MSc will provide you with a firm basis in the wide range of issues around structural and functional polymers. This multidisciplinary course is offered in conjunction with the School of Chemistry allowing you to gain a rich understanding of both traditional commodity plastics and speciality polymers with increasing application in the biomedical and pharmaceutical field, and in electronics and nanotechnology.

Accredited by the Institute of Minerals, Materials and Mining (IOM3) as meeting the Further Learning requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Multidisciplinary

The Polymer Materials Science and Engineering programme, offered in partnership with the School of Materials, is multi-disciplinary, spanning polymer physics, polymer chemistry, polymer materials science and polymer engineering. It provides you with a rich understanding of both traditional commodity plastics and speciality polymers with increasing applications in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields, and in electronics and nanotechnology. It develops students with a mainstream general chemical background into professionals with a highly marketable mix of skills and knowledge.

The programme

A Polymer Materials Science and Engineering MSc will provide you with a firm basis in the wide range of issues around structural and functional polymers. The course will prepare you for a career in industry or an academic or research career via a PhD.

The full MSc programme is made up of six taught course units and a five month research project. The taught units are:

  • Control and Design of Polymerisations
  • Polymer Characterisation
  • Structure and Mechanical Properties of Polymers
  • Polymer Processing
  • Surface Engineering and Materials Design
  • Technical Textiles (optional)

Who is this programme for?

Graduates from chemistry, physics, materials and engineering backgrounds who wish to specialise in polymer science and technology. Students and professionals in industry who require the knowledge and skills in basic polymer syntheses, polymer processing, structural characterisation, properties and polymer engineering design and manufacture.

Your options

The programme is offered as a full-time MSc and is administered by the School of Materials; if you have any questions, please contact the Postgraduate Admissions Team
