Chemistry is an enabling science, turning innovative ideas into reality, tackling major societal challenges and creating new technologies.
We conduct world-leading research into molecular machines, molecular components which move in response to specific stimuli. We are active in the field of nanotechnology. We develop materials for organic electronics and for energy-efficient molecular separations.
Organic materials for new technologies are developed within the Organic Materials Innovation Centre (OMIC). Interactions with industry are coordinated through the Knowledge Centre for Materials Chemistry (KCMC).
Internationally recognised work on nanomaterials has led to a highly successful spinout company, Nanoco Technologies Ltd. Intellectual property relating to novel polymers developed in Manchester has been licensed commercially through UMIP.
