Professor Rob Dryfe: Protons fuel graphene prospects
Professor Rob Dryfe is co-author of a publication "Proton transport through one atom thick crystals" in Nature, from Professor Andre Geim's group.
The article demonstrates that monolayers of graphene and boron nitride, despite being impervious to helium, can transport protons at a measurable rate, even at ambient conditions. The discovery could revolutionise fuel cells and other hydrogen-based technologies as they require a barrier that only allow protons – hydrogen atoms stripped off their electrons – to pass through.
