Salters’ Festivals – 11, 13 and 15 June 2018

One day hands-on science activities for Years 7/8

Spaces are filled very quickly so you are advised to enter as soon as possible to guarantee a team at the Festival of your choice.  Application on a first-come-first-served basis through Salters’


Synthesis and Spectroscopy Days - 18 to 21 June 2018

Spectroscopy Tours covering NMR, Mass Spec, XRD and with special emphasis on IR.  These have run for many years but feedback has led us to incorporate a hands-on synthesis and chromatography task as a major part of the programme.  All students will run their own IR spectra and will be shown the other spectroscopies in small groups.  This activity is suitable for large school parties of Year 11-13 students.



UG Open Days – 23 and 24 June, 30 September and 14 October 2017

The best way to get a feel for what The University of Manchester is all about is to come and visit us on one of our open days.  Open days give you the chance to find out more about the type of academic and social life you can expect at The University of Manchester – as well as an opportunity to explore the University and the city for yourself.

Our next open days will be held on:

  • Saturday 30 September 2017
  • Saturday 14 October 2017

At an open day you will be able to learn about subjects that you are interested in, meet current undergraduate students and staff, tour our campus and facilities, and gather information on all aspects of the University, allowing you to get a real feel for the place.  School of Chemistry Open Day Enquiries : 


Discover Chemistry - 25 June 2018

Discover Days at Manchester offer potential applicants the chance to gain real insight into degree programmes they might study at this University. They provide a great opportunity for participants to gain first-hand experience and make informed decisions about their university choices before the start of the UCAS application process.

‘Discover Chemistry’ is available to individuals or small groups registering on is free of charge.

The summer 2018 programme is for students who are in Year 12.  We encourage you to book your place early to avoid disappointment. Bookings will open around April/May.



Christmas lecture - December 2017

Funded and organised in partnership with the local Royal Society of Chemistry.

These run in Manchester and in Bolton, with the Manchester lecture named in honour of former staff member, Dr John Salthouse, who toured similar spectacular chemistry demonstration lectures around the country, and indeed, around the world.  Details circulated around October each year.
