Professor Gareth Morris FRS

Gareth Morris, Professor of Physical Chemistry, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. The election recognises Professor Morris' wide ranging achievements in the field of Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

Professor Morris is one of the world's foremost innovators in high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and has had a major influence on the determination of chemical structure by NMR. For more information on the reasons for his election, see the Royal Society Website.

Professor Morris was an undergraduate, postgraduate and research fellow at Magdalen College Oxford from 1972 to 1981, first as a Demy and subsequently as a graduate student, and as a Fellow by Examination. In 1978-9 he spent a year's leave of absence with Laurie Hall at the University of British Columbia as an Izaak Walton Killam postdoctoral fellow, before moving to Manchester in 1982. He was awarded the RSC Corday-Morgan prize and medal in 1988, a Leverhulme Fellowship in 1996, and the RSC Industrially-Sponsored Award in Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in 2001. In 2010, he was an invited professor at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, and in 2011 was awarded the Russell Varian Prize for NMR.


The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists, drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine. Professor Morris becomes one of around 1450 current Fellows, a list which is made up of the most eminent scientists, engineers and technologists from the UK and the Commonwealth. Current Fellows include Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawking, Harry Kroto, Tim Berners-Lee, Paul Nurse and John Sulston, whilst past members have included Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Kathleen Lonsdale and Marjory Stephenson

Fellows of the Royal Society are elected for life and designate themselves through the use of the letters FRS after their names. This year 50 new Fellows and Foreign Members have been elected.
