Location

The University of Manchester

The University of Manchester is the UK's largest single-site university, with around 7,000 academic and research staff and a student body of approximately 44,000. The University can trace its roots to 1824, and was England’s first civic university. It has a proud research history, laying claim to 26 Nobel Prize winners among its current and former staff and students. Famous firsts including splitting of the atom and creation of the first programmable computer. The University was ranked 52nd in the world (6th in the UK) in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities. The University was the first in the UK to set Social Responsibility (including Environmental Sustainability) as a core strategic goal, and it was ranked top in Europe, and 3rd world-wide, in the QS World University Sustainability Rankings. It is committed to a zero-carbon goal by 2038.

Manchester has a long history in EPR spectroscopy, and is host to the EPSRC National Research Facility for EPR which has existed in one form or another since 1995. The Facility has four Continuous Wave (CW) and three pulsed EPR spectrometer platforms, across a frequency range of 1 – 34 GHz.

City of Manchester

Manchester started life as a Roman settlement, but turned into the world's first industrial city during the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, even being the site of the world's first railway station. This period also saw the establishment of the University’s predecessor institutions, which in turn opened the doors of education to the British working classes. The Chartist, trade union and suffragette movements can all trace their roots back to Manchester. The statues of John Dalton and James Joule that welcome visitors to Manchester Town Hall demonstrate the importance of the city to the development of science and technology and vice versa. The city has an international sporting pedigree and one of the richest and most influential arts and music scenes.

Social programme

Free afternoon on Wednesday

Manchester has many cultural, architectural, historic, sporting and leisure attractions – too many to list here. The city centre is only around 1 mile from the conference venue, so easily reachable by foot or bus. Have a look at the following websites for suggestions:

The following are some of our favourite attractions:

  • The John Rylands Library: The historic University library holds one of the finest collections of rare books, manuscripts, and archives in the world. It is located on Deansgate, in the heart of the city centre, and worth visiting even for the building itself: one of the finest examples of neo-Gothic architecture in Europe.
  • Manchester Museum: The museum is a few minutes’ walk from the conference venue, at the heart of the University’s neo-Gothic buildings. It is the largest university museum in the UK, with extensive exhibits on archaeology, anthropology and natural history, including Stan the T. Rex.
  • Whitworth Art Gallery: Also a short walk from the conference venue, this University-owned gallery has collections of historic fine art, modern and contemporary art, prints and textiles. At the time of the conference there will be a special exhibition on the work of the artist J. M. W. Turner.
  • Science and Industry Museum: Well worth a visit if you enjoy your history of science, technology and industry, with a focus on Manchester’s many contributions. It is located in the city centre.

Some other ideas

  • Imperial War Museum North, Salford Quays and MediaCityUK
  • National Football Museum
  • Old Trafford (Manchester United Football Club)
  • Etihad Stadium (Manchester City Football Club)
  • Manchester Town Hall (unfortunately shut for refurbishment, but still a magnificent building) and Albert Square
  • Manchester Central Library, and St Peter's Square
  • The Northern Quarter and nearby areas (for hipster types and the best craft breweries in the land).
