Analytical Methods and Physical Chemistry
The Analytical Methods and Physical Chemistry group of the School of Chemistry is at the forefront of the development of new NMR, mass spectrometric, optical (Raman, X-ray ) spectroscopic and electrochemical methods to characterise chemical systems.
Our researchers
Staff are associated with the University’s research institutes: biophysical analysis is a focus of the work of Barran, Golovanov, Goodacre, Lockyer and Waltho – who are all based in the MIB (Manchester Institute of Biotechnology). Spectroscopic characterisation of the actinides, and development of other advanced laser spectroscopic techniques, are performed in collaboration with the University’s Dalton Nuclear Institute (Denecke, Truong). Through Baker, who is developing a programme of research on synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy/scattering and neutron scattering, we also have links with the University’s activity at the Diamond Synchrotron at Harwell, Oxfordshire.
In the Chemistry building, the focus of the Manchester NMR methodology group (Morris, Nilsson, Adams) is the development of new techniques in high resolution NMR spectroscopy. Dryfe leads the Manchester electrochemistry group, which focuses on the development of new electrochemical techniques and their applications, including those relating to 2D materials.
