Should I apply for a BSc or an MChem degree?
The School offers you the choice of a three or four year programme, which leads to a BSc or MChem degree. The first two years follow a core structure, which allows greater flexibility in the third and fourth years.
The MChem degree
The MChem degree has been designed to meet the needs of graduates who seek careers as professional chemists in industrial research groups or in higher education. These graduates require a broad base of advanced chemical knowledge and sufficient laboratory instruction and project experience to develop expertise in a range of demanding experimental techniques. In previous years students' have only been able to obtained this knowledge and expertise from a higher degree, either an MSc or from the early part of a PhD.
The School recognises that a number of factors such as: (i) changes in secondary education and access methods to higher education, (ii) continuing growth in chemical knowledge and, (iii) the need for compatibility with qualifications in Europe, mean that there is now a real need for a four-year undergraduate degree course to provide these additional skills. The introduction of the MChem. degree parallels the introduction of MPhys. and MMaths degrees in Physics and Mathematics.
The Core Course - years 1 and 2
We run a 'core course' for the first two years of each degree programme and this core is identical for the BSc and MChem. Eligibility for continuation on the MChem programme is based on your general performance and your second year mark. If you have not performed to a satisfactory standard, you will be transferred to the BSc programme.
