Mass Spectrometry Service
The MS suite is housed in GE.02 in the Chemistry Building and provides a range of techniques which staff, students and external customers may use.
- Electrospray (ES) A good general technique. Good for polar organic or organometallic molecules, salts and acids. Maximum mass ~ 2800
- Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation (APCI) Better on non polar compounds than ES.
- Electron Impact / Chemical Ionisation (EI/CI) Use for organic samples that melt below ~250 deg and have a molecular mass less than ~500.
- Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation (MALDI) Polymers, organometallics and high mass samples.
- Gas Chromatography and Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS and LCMS ) Please enquire before sample preparation.
- High Resolution Accurate Mass Measurements Upper mass limit is ~ 1,000 Normally reserved for novel compounds for data reported in a paper or a thesis.
