Research degrees
A research degree involves sustained, in-depth study of a specific area, which is then written up as a thesis for examination.
The School of Chemistry offers you the chance to work and research alongside some of the best scientists in the field through taking one of our standard research degrees - PhD, MPhil and MSc by Research. Other research degrees offered are EngD, EntD and MEnt.
PhD research degree
A PhD research degree takes place over three-four years, during which you will carry out research into the area you have chosen and finish with the publication of your own thesis (on which you will be assessed). Throughout the course of your PhD you will receive supervision from a member of academic staff in the School which takes the form of regular meetings about your work.
Depending on your education and work experience you may register directly for a PhD degree, or initially register for an MPhil. You are able to transfer to second year PhD status if satisfactory progress is made in year one. Part-time study is also available.
This programme route is also available as a split-site option, which enables overseas students to split their studies between the UK and their home country. If a student would like to take this route a supervisor must be appointed in the UK and overseas, and confirmation of free time and study plan must be approved by both supervisors.
Details of currently available PhD research opportunities can be found here.-
MPhil research degree
If you are enthusiastic about research but do not yet wish to undertake a PhD then an MPhil degree may be for you. It takes place over a single year, during which you will carry out research in one of the many areas covered by the School of Chemistry. After successful assessment you emerge with the publication of your own MPhil thesis .

MSc by Research
The School also offers MSc by Research in Biological, Inorganic, Materials, Organic, Physical and Theoretical Chemistry.
This programme will normally consist of a 120-150 credit research project and additional 30-60 credits of taught content, creating a standard 180 credit Postgraduate MSc Programme. The duration of the programme will be one year full-time study.
The taught modules are chosen under guidance of the research supervisor from a selection offered by the School of Chemistry and other University departments. The selected modules are assessed before completion of the research project and the dissertation is submitted in September. This programme is therefore designed to allow students to combine masters level taught modules with research skills and training development. -
Master of Enterprise (MEnt)
The Master of Enterprise (MEnt) is run jointly by the School and Manchester Enterprise Centre. The course has been designed to combine Masters level research, sound business theory and the practical enterprise skills needed to apply that knowledge in a business context.
