Welcome to the Doctoral Training Centre for Nuclear Fission Research, Science & Technology (Nuclear FiRST)

Nuclear FiRST PhDs

Nuclear FiRST was established in January 2009, with a £6.3M investment from EPSRC, to provide a national training centre for doctoral scientists and engineers in nuclear fission science and technology. We are adopting a radically different approach to PhD study.

Nuclear FiRST aims to underpin UK Energy and Defence strategy by addressing a growing doctoral skills gap in nuclear fission science and engineering. We offer an exciting and interdisciplinary approach to postgraduate research training, combining a Masters level foundation year with a three year Doctoral level thesis project. This is supplemented by training in professional skills and project placements in industry or research institutes in the UK and overseas.

Nuclear FiRST is a collaboration between The University of Manchester and The University of Sheffield, involving four internationally leading research groups in nuclear science and engineering:

These groups are based in the Schools of Chemistry and Materials at the University of Manchester and The Departments of Engineering Materials and Civil Engineering at The University of Sheffield.

DTC Open Day

The DTC will hold a series of open days throughout 2009/10, providing potential applicants with the opportunity to meet academic staff and learn more about the DTC training programme.  If you wish to receive details of the open day, please email nuclearfirstdtc@manchester.ac.uk.

DTC Studentships

The DTC is currently recruiting up to ten fully funded four year scholarships, for October 2010 entry. For further details, please email nuclearfirstdtc@manchester.ac.uk.
