Catalysis Course April 2010

X- Ray Diffraction

The overall objectives of this component of the course are for the candidates to be successfully able to determine a crystal structure by analysis and comparison of data available in common databases.

Candidates will:

  • Learn the fundamentals and theory of X- Ray (Powder and Single Crystal) Diffraction.
  • Be able to recognize the different types of crystallographic databases and become familiar with how to use them.
  • Be able to compare different diffraction patterns.
  • Be able to convert 2θ to d.
  • Understand what is meant by  “d- spacing” and how to obtain it from the unit cell dimensions
  • 1D NMR spectrum
